A contemporary, converted warehouse retaining original beams and stone walls. The ambience is relaxed and informal, the staff welcoming and friendly. Starters include a delicious goat’s cheese and vegetable tartlet or, for the more adventurous, whisky-soaked haggis rolled in oatmeal. Our favourite main course was a bacon-wrapped breast of pheasant with a black pudding mash topped with a thyme and red wine sauce. Su-perb!

An uber-chic venue reminiscent of a New York loft. Though cosy, the restaurant has an airy feel due in most part to the huge windows overlooking busy Broughton street. An impressive, seasonally-changing menu makes best use of the freshest produce and the menu features innovative takes on many classic favourites. Starters include grilled goats cheese on roast vegetables and for the main course we loved the pan-fried sea-bass with a chilli jam and the rich venison casserole with tangy redcurrants. De-licious! The Olive Branch has an excellent wine list and the 3-course set lunch is superb value.

With 40 years at the forefront of healthy eating in Edinburgh you’ll enjoy  Henderson’s tasteful décor and relaxed ambience. The ingredients are fresh, locally sourced and completely organic – including the extensive wine list! Henderson’s staples include chunky vegetable soup and a delicious baked vegetable lasagne. The Moroccan stew is perfect for those looking for a bit more impact! Blackboards feature daily specials and Hendersons cater with a smile for special dietary needs such as gluten, wheat and dairy free dishes.

Nestled in the curving sweep of Victoria Street in the historic Grassmarket, Howies is rustic, but stylish with white-washed stone walls hung with large, contemporary canvasses and visible ducting. It’s bright and airy at the front with large windows onto Victoria Street and intimate and cosy at the back. The multi-national waiters are knowledgeable and thoroughly charming. The constantly changing menus feature good, Scottish staple ingredients, locally sourced where possible. We especially loved the haggis-stuffed filo parcels with a dollop of chilli jam and the goat’s cheese and Waldorf salad. The Cullen Skink is a meal in itself! For mains we enjoyed the venison and thyme burger with an apple and whisky chutney and the rich milk-fed pork medallions in a Dijon cream with a comforting black pudding mash. Rich, filling and satisfying. Look out for Howies famous lunch-time specials – two courses for just £6.95!

Bright and chic with wonderful artwork adorning the walls, Toast has a relaxed, informal ambience. Innovative menus make best use of ingredients sourced from a local fishmonger, greengrocer and butcher. Starters include dependably delicious home-made soups with organic bread and duck and herb salad with a raspberry chutney. Mains include wild mushroom and haricot bean moussaka and sea bass with a lemon and parsley crust with olive crushed potatoes. Look out for Toast’s regular wine-tasting dinners offered in conjunction with local wine merchants. Seven or eight different wines are typically offered with a three course meal.

Set in the elegant, traditional surroundings of Dunstane’s drawing room, Skerries offers a la carte dining or daily set lunch and dinner menus. The menu primarily consists of stylish fish dishes using produce from the Orkney and Shetland islands (reflecting the owners Orcadian heritage). Some meat dishes are offered using prime Scottish produce. Starters include Orkney smoked haddock and prawn terrine and tartare of smoked salmon with beetroot and a honey and balsamic dressing. Mains include Orkney scallops and king prawns with a Chorizo risotto and baked Orkney salmon with pancetta and leeks. Look out for the great-value lunchtime set menus – just £9.95 for two courses.

Creelers restaurant in Edinburgh builds on the success of the parent restaurant in Arran and offers stylish seafood with an Asian-fusion twist based on top-quality, locally sourced ingredients. The décor has a deep-sea theme featuring a large mural by the artist Victoria Orr-Ewing. The rear section hosts regularly changing displays by young Scottish artists. Starters include Creelers own fish soup with rouile and teriyaki squid with stir fried vegetables. Or try the impressive seafood platter for two! Mains include fillet of halibut with pommery mash, chanterelles and pancetta and spiced mixed seafood laksa with a timbale of jasmine rice. If you’re feeling adventurous try the English Country Rhubarb wine – the perfect accompaniment to shellfish!

A Leith institution for the past 30 years you can sample the bounty of the sea in Skipper’s cosy, wood-panelled interior or – if the weather is fine – take advantage of the charming terrace. You won’t be disappointed! For starters try the flavourful Cullen Skink or Skippers’ own fishcakes with a sauce gribiche. Simply unforgettable are the West Coast mussels in a rich shallot, white wine and lemon balm sauce (so delicious we could’ve eaten two portions). For mains try half a dozen seared king scallops with a tasty smoked haddock risotto or indulge yourself with half a lobster accompanied by a tangy spiced aioli. Oh …Yes!

Café Royal Oyster Bar 17 West Register St., EH2 2AA 0131 554 1018
 
Step inside and you’ll be transported back in time to an age of sumptuous Victorian splendour. With its elaborate plasterwork, eight fabulous stained glass windows (designed by Edinburgh firm Ballantine and Gardiner) and original Doulton tile murals Café Royal is worth a visit for the décor alone! Not that the food isn’t fantastic. Start with half a dozen rock oysters au naturale (with lemon juice and Tabasco) Kilpatrick style (wrapped in bacon and drizzled with balsamic) or Rockefeller (with spinach, Pernod and hollandaise). Yum.  If oysters aren’t your thing try the crab on rocket or the delicious langoustines Breval. For your main course we recommend the oh-so-delicate monkfish wrapped in parma ham. The Dover Sole Meuniere is worth a mention too. If you’re a huge seafood fan why not just go for it and order the hearty seafood platter. You know you want to!

Impressing Out-of-Towners

Wow your visitors without spending a fortune. The ‘Room’ is airy, friendly, welcoming and informal, the décor relaxed. Focusing on high-quality Scottish ingredients the menu is innovative and eclectic. For starters try Stornoway black pudding and spinach rarebit tart or if you fancy something lighter try the smoked trout and watercress mousse with Arran oatcakes. For mains we loved the seared West Coast scallops with mull cheddar Scotch pancakes and the harissa braised lamb shank with apricot, red onion and pistachio cous-cous. Rich, satisfying and de-licious! The wine list is perfectly acceptable but for the best possible value why not nip across to the wine shop and grab your own? (£2 charged for corkage).

What’s truly spectacular about this little bistro is its location. From its airy and elegant continental-style interior you can gaze across the spectacular Firth of Forth to Fife while sipping a cappuccino or tucking into a hearty meal. For a light meal or appetiser try the homemade chicken liver pate with onion marmalade and oatcakes. For a main course try the chargrilled chicken with roast veggies drizzled with a flavourful rocket pesto. On a cold day we recommend comforting Porto & Fi fish pie topped with a leek mash or home made vegetable cakes with a warming dollop of chilli jam.

Housed in a cosy, atmospheric labyrinth of stone cellars, Stac Polly has a homely, rustic feel that’s decidedly Scottish. The menu is a contemporary twist on traditional Scottish fayre. For a starter try the signature haggis filo parcels with a sweet plum sauce or the rich tomato consommé with a homemade wild mushroom ravioli. For the main course we recommend the roast fillet of venison with a quenelle of cabbage mousse and galette of potato with crispy pancetta.  Or try the monkfish with Ayrshire ham, lime and saffron. Coffee is served with a creamy whisky fudge and if your visitors are intent on a dram, Stac Polly have a superb selection.

Close by Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre, B’est is light and airy with a decidedly French shabby chic feel. The lighting can be a bit harsh though if you're looking for romance! The menus are innovative and constantly changing. For starters we recommend the fresh mussels mariniere and the smoked chicken and mango salad. For a main course we’d recommend the pan-fried guinea fowl with a pink peppercorn sauce and the quenelle of seafood served with a mussel velout. Look out for dinner with a comedy show during the Fringe.

All three Zizzi establishments are located close to theatres and cinemas. The service is prompt – ideal for a quick in/out! The décor is stylish and contemporary and the menu consists of simple Italian recipes made from fresh, quality ingredients. For starters – especially when time is short – why not share an Antipasto Misto – a selection of delicious Italian cold cuts with sundried tomatoes, olives and a scrumptious warm red onion focaccia. Or try oven-baked goat’s cheese on ciabatta. For mains we loved the oven-baked Penne del Casa – chicken, smoked pancetta and baby spinach with a mushroom sauce. We also enjoyed the Linguine ai Gamberi – tiger prawns, tomatoes and chilli with a fresh basil and tomato sauce. Or in the warmer months why not choose from a selection of delicious salads?

The Dining Room at The Society – The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, 28 Queen St., EH2
 
Enjoy a superb pre-theatre meal in the relaxed but elegant surroundings of a traditional Georgian dining room. The menu changes constantly but starters include options like pumpkin soup with herb gnocchi and whisky-cured salmon terrine with a light gazpacho salad and crème fraiche. Mains options include a hearty daube of beef bourgignon with a horseradish mash and grilled sea bream on a saffron risotto. The portions are small but plenty filling when you’ll be squashed in a seat for the evening!.

Nargile offer upmarket Turkish cuisine, freshly prepared using quality local produce. The décor is light, simple, airy and welcoming. For starters – particularly if you’re new to Turkish food – we recommend the Meze which is a selection of Turkish appetisers including humus, borek, sucuk, saksuka and spicy chicken wings served with warm pitta bread. The Dana Sogus – strips of marinated chargrilled steak tossed with a mixed salad is light and delicious. For mains why not try the Kars Kebabi – rolled lamb stuffed with pate, chargrilled and served on an apricot and thyme sauce with pilau rice.   Or the Tavuk Dolmasi – chicken fillets stuffed with crab, chargrilled and served on a lemon and caper sauce with pilau rice. Mouthwatering!

A perfect opportunity to sample North African and Meditteranean cuisine in a friendly and relaxed environment. The décor is bright and colourful and the place fair buzzes with lively students! Why not get the ball rolling with one of the shared starter platters? For a main course try rich and hearty okra lamb casserole or a sweet and fruity lamb tagine. Or opt for a vast plate of mussels in a spicy broth. We loved the kibdeh (spiced lamb’s liver) which you can team with some vegetable cous-cous and a side order of fragrant tabbouleh. And don’t the fabulous garlic pitta! Superb value for money and you can even bring your own wine (corkage £1.50).

You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into the Caribbean in this bright, colourful and thoroughly welcoming establishment. Bask in the glow of a fabulous menu based on exotic dishes from central and South America. Great value for money too! For an appetising starter you can’t beat the deliciously light and fragrant Ceviche (marinated fish with spices and garlic). We scarcely knew where to start with the mouth-watering main courses. We loved the Venezuellan Pabellon – an unusual stew of beef with black beans and rice. And the Caribbean-style Langostinos la Plancha (succulent king prawns with rice and fried plantain banana) had an authentically tropical taste. For a full-on holiday experience why not treat yourself to a cocktail or order a pitcher of mojitos?

At Tang’s you’ll experience some of the most delicate and flavoursome Japanese food you could wish for. The interior is tranquil and simple – very zen! -  and the varied menu includes some Chinese and Thai dishes. For a great introduction why not try the Ichiban Bento – a beautifully balanced dish presented in an attractive lacquered box containing teriyaki chicken, a selection of first-class sushi, vegetable tempura and a portion of sticky rice. Delicate, healthy and delicious! Or you could try the Samurai bento – sushi, noodles and gyoza dumplings. If bento boxes aren’t your thing we can heartily recommend the unmissable cod in a delicious miso sauce. Fabulous!

With its colourful décor and relaxed ambience the Raj has a lovely position overlooking the shore at Leith. The menu is just as colourful!   For starters try the flavourful marinated spiced fish Bangladeshi style or the Pakora Calamari (spiced squid in chickpea batter). We really loved the Goan Lamb Vindaloo – succulent lamb marinated in cider vinegar with chilli, paprika and methi – a mouth-watering combination of flavours. Or choose from a selection of dishes which were awarded International Indian Chef of the Year including chicken with fresh green chilli, coconut and coriander.

Duck’s is an intimate, classically elegant venue with a highly sophisticated menu, attentive staff and an award-winning wine list. Past patrons include Sean Connery, Gordon Grown and Princess Anne. To whet your appetite why not try beetroot cured halibut with shrimps, cucumber, chives and West Coast oysters? Or asparagus with Serrano ham, truffled egg and mousserons? To follow we heartily recommend the roast hake with fennel, crisp sour dough and a vanilla and herb dressing. Or indeed the loin of Perthshire venison with chestnuts, sprouts and fondant potato.

Superb modern Scottish cuisine in an elegant setting within a 5-star Georgian hotel. Sip an aperitif in the drawing room before sampling the 5-star menu and service in the dining room. You could start with pan-roasted scallops with wasabi pomme puree and salsa verde. Or you could try twice-baked goat’s cheese soufflé with caramelised pear and walnut salad. Mains include roast breast of Gressingham duck, pak choi and vanilla jus or fillet of Scottish beef, spinach, parmesan and anchovy puree with pommes dauphinoise. If you’ve still got room after all that, the selection of Mellis cheeses with oatcakes and gingerbread is sensational.

The Witchery – The Witchery by the Castle, Castlehill, The Royal Mile, EH1 2NF 0131 225 5613
 
Housed in a 16th century building by the gates of EdinburghCastle, The Witchery has a reputation for superb cuisine. The oak panelled walls are draped with rich tapestries and mirrors and the spectacular gilded ceilings are reminiscent of those in HolyroodPalace. The overall effect is theatrical, decadent, atmospheric and thoroughly indulgent. The ideal spot for kindling (or re-kindling) romance! Past patrons include Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta Jones and Jack Nicholson. Andrew Lloyd Weber called it ‘the prettiest restaurant ever’!
Starters include a flavoursome Terrine of Wild Rabbit and Toulouse Sausage with beetroot remoulade or Ceviche of Western Isle Scallops and Oak Smoked Salmon. Main courses include Chateaubriand of Borders Beef with a béarnaise sauce or Peppered Monkfish with apple roast pork belly and ‘red clawed crayfish’. As you might expect, The Witchery has a diverse and internationally-renowned wine list.

Awarded the Capital’s first Michelin star, the environment is bright, airy and tranquil with a decidedly art-deco feel. The location’s great too being adjacent to the picturesque Water of Leith. The superb cuisine is firmly in the classic French tradition and the menus change regularly to take advantage of the freshest, seasonally-available ingredients. Dinner starts with a selection of delicate, flavoursome canapés. Appetisers include a Presse of Foie Gras and Smoked Pheasant or a Langoustines, Potato and Orange Mousseline. The superb main selection includes Steamed Sea Bass with Oyster Ravioli or Poached Anjou Pigeon with Calamari Risotto, Oyster Rissolee and Savoy Cabbage. If you’re feeling really adventurous, why not try the 7-course Tasting Menu?

This Michelin-starred establishment serves up dependably creative dishes using only the finest and freshest Scottish ingredients and the team has received numerous prestigious culinary awards. The surroundings showcase the opulent yet restrained luxury we’ve come to expect from the Balmoral and the service is courteous and thoroughly professional. 
 
Starters include Anjou Pigeon with pea puree, baby gem and white asparagus or Buttered Poached Guinea Fowl, celeriac mousse and apple and tarragon salad. To follow you could choose Pork Fillet and Pig’s Trotter with pancetta and sage risotto or Breast of Gressingham Duck with plum and beetroot compote, Parmenter potatoes and chicory.
Price guide – dinner £55 for 3 courses. A selection of cheeses is available for an additional £11. Or try the Chef’s Tasting Menu at £60.

Set in 18 acres of stunning parkland in a white-rendered former Lord Provost’s house, Prestonfield hotel is an extraordinarily opulent celebrity hideaway, described by the Mr. and Mrs. Smith guide to Europe’s sexiest locations as ‘the only romantic destination in Scotland’. With walls lavishly upholstered in shades of deep red, black and bronze and sparkling chandeliers dangling from domed ceilings Conde Naste Traveller described the restaurant  as ‘like walking onto the set of some flamboyant costume drama’.
Starters include Roasted Butternut Squash and Marjoram Ravioli with Pecorino Mornay or Pan-seared Scallops on Horseradish pomme puree. Mains include Seared Fillet of Turbot on Langoustine crushed potatoes or Roast Cannon of Scottish Borders lamb, ecrasse potatoes, black olive and garlic jus.

Establishing Your Cool Credentials….

Step aboard The Tower’s dedicated express lift, soar high above the Museum of Scotland and step into the last word in chic and uber-cool interiors. Sheathed in glossy aluminium, richly supplied with tactile fabrics and specially commissioned art-pieces, the space is creatively lit to create an aesthetic yet relaxed ambience with spectacular views of the city skyline. Who else loves the Tower? Joanna Lumley, Helena Bonham Carter, Jeremy Paxman, Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta Jones.
The food’s cutting edge too. Starters include Beef Fillet Carpaccio with Red Cabbage, Chervil and crème fraiche salad or hand-picked rock oysters with a shallot and pickled vegetable vinegar. Mains include Porcetta Pig Roll with Polenta, Green Pepper and Caper salsa or Sea Bass wrapped in Proscuittio and Clam Cioppino.

Descend into this cavernous underground space and discover a groovy, decidedly pink interior with a 70’s feel and an ultra-chic clientele (allegedly a favourite haunt of Prince William when he was at St. Andrews!). Test the skills of the award-winning cocktail maker before tackling the East-meets-West fusion menu with a decidedly Japanese slant. For lighter pre-dance fare you could stick to the sushi, sashimi and fabulous bento boxes. If you need heartier fare before strutting your funky stuff, however, try the Opal Indonesian fried rice with duck and baked shitake mushrooms. Or fill up on some delicious Thai fishcakes.

The interior of this stunning restaurant is just what you’d expect from Harvey Nicks.   It’s cutting-edge contemporary with a funky retro feel and the lighting’s tranquil and moody. But the real stars of this show are undoubtedly the floor-to-ceiling windows which run the restaurant’s full length and offer a spectacular panoramic tableau which includes the castle, the New Town skyline and the Firth of Forth. 
To kick off a cosseted evening why not sip champagne from an extensive selection in the fabulous bar area? Starters from the stylish and innovative menu include Celeriac Veloute with sherry syrup and toasted almonds and White Bean and Quail Egg Ravioli with wilted sorrel, mint and roasted pistachio. To follow you could have Roast Loin and Smoked Belly of Rabbit with watercress puree and herb gnocchi or Pig’s Trotter with Oak Smoked Ham and Herb Roast Lobster. What’s not to love?

A Stress- Free Meal with the Kids

With its bright cheerful décor and warm family atmosphere, Mamma’s is a great place to take the kids. Although there’s a range of food on the menu the undoubted stars of this particular show are the pizzas. Measured by the inch they range from a modest 9 inch all the way to a monster 16 inch. Sharing is positively encouraged (and offers great value for money) and diners can choose from all the usual toppings you’d expect together with some that will definitely raise a few eyebrows – banana, baked beans, cactus, haggis, chocolate and marshmallow. Yee – hah! And to stem those sibling squabbles you can ask for different toppings on each half of the family pizza at no extra cost. Activities for the wee ones include monthly colouring competitions and really little ‘uns are invited to delve into Mamma’s Treasure Chest. 
Starters include nachos, cullen skink and a range of tasty light salads. If by any chance pizza’s not your thing the main course menu includes all the usual pasta suspects, a special house chilli and a seafood gumbo. So grab the kids and get yourself a great night out!

This truly is parent heaven! The décor’s fresh, bright and contemporary but the real draw is the fantastic kids’ soft play area and indoor climbing frame. Oh…. Yes! CCTV keeps an eye on your precious darlings while you catch up on the goss. There’s even a retro video games machine for the not-so-small! Throw in a wide, buggy-friendly entrance, indoor buggy parking and baby changing room and you’ll think all your Christmasses have come at once. And the food’s great too. It’s high quality, home-made and healthy. Adults can start with a delectable crayfish cocktail, a warm beef salad or some tasty grilled goat’s cheese. For mains we loved Sirloin Steak Balmoral (in a creamy whisky sauce) and the succulent Lamb Shank which fair fell of the bone. The accompanying dark sauce was rich and satisfying. The kid’s menu is a paired down version of the adult one and offers a selection of delicious pasta dishes, fish ‘n chips and burgers. For a truly memorable treat, why not combine a meal at Reds with a day out at the seaside?

The interior is bright, welcoming with a distinctively artsy feel. For the kids there are plenty of toys, books, blackboards and even an outdoor play area where they can let off some steam.   Peruse the constantly changing selection of artwork on the walls at the same time as you choose from a really good selection of home-made food including a hearty chorizo and butterbean stew and sweet potato enchiladas. For the nippers there’s pizza, sandwiches and a great value snack plate. The café’s open mainly at lunchtime but is open in the evenings when there’s a performance.

When - kids-in-tow -you enter this classy looking establishment with its crisp, starched linen, fresh flowers and twinkling fairy lights you might be tempted to back out again. Too posh for kids! But, in fact, the Stockbridge is the ideal venue for special occasions when you want to include the little dears. Starters from the award-winning menu include Seared Scallops with a spring onion blini and Spiced Pigeon Breast with red onion marmalade and a port wine jus. Mains include Fillet of Wild Halibut with a hash brown, oyster mushrooms, spinach, quail’s egg, pancetta and Arran mustard sauce and Pan-fried Gressingham Duck with ratte potatoes, savoy cabbage, beetroot and goat’s cheese tartlet and jus. 
Y-es… but what about the kids? Ah. This is where it gets really good. On the first Sunday of every month Stockbridge offer their famous Tots Taster Menu. Six small, fabulously conceived courses arrive at regular intervals to keep the little ones entertained. A typical taster menu could include Sweetcorn Espresso with Popped Corn Croutons, Shetland Organic Salmon cakes with avocado puree, cherry tomatoes and lemon dressing and Baby Buccleuch Beef with creamed potatoes. The Fruit Sticks with Chocolate Paint Pots will get them salivating and if you offer them a Babeliciouschino (hot chocolate and foam served in tiny expresso cups) they’ll think they’re in grown up heaven. Awwww! So don their best bibs and tuckers, order the limo and go celebrate!
